🐦 Someone is trying to bring Twitter back

A Virginia startup has launched Twitter.now, betting that Elon Musk’s rebrand to X left the old Twitter name, bird logo, and other trademarks available for someone else to reclaim.

The Shift:

Twitter.now is officially live - Operation Bluebird launched the new social network with the familiar replies and retweets of old Twitter, though the platform currently has only hundreds of users.

The startup says X abandoned Twitter - Operation Bluebird argues Musk gave up rights to the Twitter identity after rebranding to X, and an April hearing saw a federal judge tentatively suggest X may have abandoned some related intellectual property rights.

X is already fighting it in court - X Corporation sued Operation Bluebird and sought to block the revived Twitter, while the judge has yet to issue a written ruling on the trademark dispute.

Every tweet gets an AI fact-check - Twitter.now has built Vera, a Gemini-powered system that automatically analyzes posts for accuracy as part of its attempt to create a less harmful public feed.

Rebranding Twitter to X may have created an unexpected opening for someone else to rebuild around one of the internet’s most recognizable identities. But launching Twitter.now turns an interesting trademark argument into a real platform competing for users, making the legal fight with X far more consequential.

Nobody actually knows how AI gets used.

AI tool sprawl happened fast, and visibility never caught up. Employees paste contracts into ChatGPT, run code through Copilot, and build workflows in apps security never approved.

Harmonic Security classifies every AI interaction by task, tool, and team, so you can see which use cases drive real productivity, which tools are shelfware, and where sensitive data is headed. Across approved and unapproved apps alike.

No need to guess what 'AI adoption' means inside your company.

🖥️ Apple turns the Mac mini into an AI machine

Apple’s smallest desktop is getting one of its biggest upgrades yet. The new Mac mini introduces the M6 chip and puts local, always-on AI workloads at the center of how Apple is positioning the machine.

The Shift:

M6 delivers up to 4x faster AI performance - Apple says the new chip also brings 40% faster CPU performance and 2x faster storage and graphics compared with the previous model.

Local AI gets more capable - The M6 model is designed to accelerate on-device AI workloads, while the higher-end M5 Pro configuration can handle larger models locally without sending workloads to the cloud.

Unified memory gives local models room to run - CPU and GPU can access the same memory pool of up to 64GB, helping developers run demanding models and agentic workflows directly on the Mac mini.

Apple is explicitly pitching it for AI agents - The company now calls Mac mini its “leading desktop for always-on agentic computing,” positioning the tiny desktop as a machine that can keep AI workflows running continuously.

The interesting shift is how Apple is selling the Mac mini. It is no longer framed only as an affordable desktop or compact workstation. Apple is turning local AI into a core use case, betting that developers and businesses will increasingly want agents running continuously on hardware they own.

🔭 NASA’s next flagship telescope is ready to launch

NASA is preparing to launch the $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30, giving astronomers a dramatically wider view of the universe while maintaining Hubble-like sharpness.

The Shift:

Roman can survey the sky up to 1,000x faster than Hubble - Its infrared resolution is comparable to Hubble, but a field of view at least 100x larger will let astronomers study huge regions of space at once.

Thousands of new worlds could be discovered - Roman’s microlensing survey is expected to find around 2,500 planets, including rocky, distant, and potentially free-floating worlds that other planet-hunting methods can struggle to detect.

More than a billion galaxies will help probe dark energy - Roman will map galaxies, matter, and supernovae across cosmic history to investigate why the universe’s expansion is accelerating and test competing explanations.

Roman will help directly image exoplanets - A dedicated Coronagraph Instrument will demonstrate technology that blocks a star’s overwhelming light so much fainter planets around it can be observed.

Hubble gave astronomers extraordinarily detailed windows into the universe. Roman is designed to keep much of that detail while making the window enormously wider. That combination could turn discoveries that once required carefully targeted observations into surveys covering billions of cosmic objects.

👩‍💻Quick Shifts

📱 Meta is overhauling how teens use Instagram and Facebook under a sweeping U.S. settlement. Younger users will get stricter usage controls, stronger age checks, nighttime restrictions, and the option to use feeds that aren’t personalized by Meta’s recommendation algorithms.

🗺️ Apple Maps has started showing paid placements in suggested places and search results. The ads are rolling out across the U.S. and Canada, while Apple says users’ locations and ad interactions won’t be associated with their Apple Accounts.

💻 Apple is reportedly giving some recent Mac mini buyers free upgrades from M4 machines to M6 or M5 Pro models. Component shortages appear to be behind the swaps, although some customers are seeing their delivery dates pushed back.

🚗 Tesla is recalling about 3 million vehicles in China over door handle and driver-monitoring safety issues. The fixes include over-the-air software updates, warning labels, and expanded in-cabin camera monitoring on affected vehicles.

👗 Shein is targeting a $27 billion valuation in its Hong Kong IPO. The fast-fashion retailer plans to raise $1.77 billion, putting its valuation far below its $98.2 billion 2022 peak after slowing growth, tariffs, and profitability pressure.
